General Tips
- tailor your resume to the program’s description
- look at the keywords from the program’s website and highlight them in your application
- ex: teamwork, collaboration, interdisciplinary, etc.
- add hyperlinks in your resume for the specific companies and organizations you worked for
- hype yourself up!
- talk about awards, accomplishments, etc.
- don’t be afraid to include experiences that you may think not be 100% “relevant” to the program
- by including these, you show that you’re a well-rounded applicant
- you can always find a way to tie in any experience to your program!
- for example, I made sure to include my experience as a photographer in my resume because it demonstrates my soft skills including:
- collaborating with lots of organizers to arrange photoshoots → this translates to my strong ability to work in group projects for Master’s courses
- developing written communication skills by writing educational content for my Instagram page → this is helpful for when I do written assignments
Education
- include your cumulative GPA (if you don’t know what this is, there are lots of online calculators to calculate this)
- mention relevant courses that you have taken, if they align with the program you are taking
- when I applied to Mac’s global health program, I mentioned that I have taken a global health advocacy and global health innovation course in undergrad
- mention any academic awards you may have received (ex: course distinctions, Honour roll, etc).
- hyperlink your program’s website in your resume
Work + Volunteering
- try to use 3-5 bullet points per experience (not more than 5)
- add numbers and metrics to quantify your achievements (ex: gained X followers on Instagram, working with Y people of people, presented at a conference with Z attendees)
