👉 Reaching out to students in the program of interest can unlock a world of opportunities

Cold Messaging on LinkedIn
- using LinkedIn’s search bar, search up your desired program name and school to find students
- I suggest reaching out to current students because students usually have more recent experience applying to the program, and may have more time to hop on a call with you!
- try to reach out to a few students based on the search results- don’t worry if some of them do not respond, they may be busy and that’s ok!
- when sending a connection request on LinkedIn, you may only have a few characters to share a message (usually 200-300 characters)
- keep the request short and simple, something like this:
- “Hi [name of person]! My name is [your name], and I'm an undergrad student at [school] studying [program]. I am interested in applying to the [graduate program at XYZ school], and would love to learn more about your experiences with the program!
- introduce yourself, why you are reaching out to them (to learn more about their program), and ask to learn more!
Questions to Ask Students
- What inspired you to pursue this Master’s program?
- What is the student life / student culture like?
- What types of job opportunities exist within your program or your campus?
- What type of courses are you taking?
- What do you enjoy about your courses?
- What do you not enjoy about your courses?
- Do you have any advice on applying to this program?
- What did you study before you got into this program? What type of work experience did you have?
- What do you think prospective students should know before applying to this program?
- What do you enjoy / not enjoy about your program?
- I saw on the program website that it says this [mention a specific thing you found on the website, like a course, an event, a feature of application], could you tell me a bit more about that?
- for example, “I saw on the program website that the application asks you to have demonstrated research experience to apply, can you tell me what your experience was like with this?”
